The Government of India is committed to the welfare and empowerment of rural women. In line with this commitment, the central government has launched the Ujjwala scheme to provide LPG cylinders to every rural household. This initiative aims to improve the health of rural women and protect the environment.
PM Ujjwala Yojana 2024
Launched eight years ago under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG), the Ujjwala Scheme provides cooking fuel to rural women, replacing traditional cooking methods like coal, chulhas, firewood, and cow dung cakes. These conventional methods have led to numerous health issues for rural women, affecting their overall well-being and daily lives.
Health Problems from Traditional Cooking:
- Respiratory issues
- Back pain
- Lung cancer
- Ocular diseases
- Spinal problems
- Cardiovascular diseases
The scheme also aims to reduce air pollution by encouraging rural households to use LPG cylinders without worrying about the cost. The government has now introduced PMUY 2.0, which will provide an additional 1.6 crore LPG connections to migrant households.
