Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Scholarships for Doctoral Studies 2025

Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Scholarships 2025 is an initiative of the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund (JNMF) to support students registered or admitted for a Ph.D. degree at a recognised university or institution in India. The scholarship aims to support Ph.D. studies in India for Indian nationals and nationals of other Asian countries. Under this scholarship, applicants can choose any one of the following areas of specialisation:

  • Indian History and Civilization
  • Sociology
  • Comparative Studies in Religion and Culture
  • Economics
  • Ecology and Environment

The selected students will receive a monthly maintenance allowance of ₹18,000, which covers tuition fees. They will also receive an annual contingent allowance of ₹15,000 for study tours within India, purchasing books and stationery.

Eligibility

To be eligible, an applicant must:-

  • be below 35 years of age as of 1st October of the year of selection*
  • be a full-time Ph.D. scholar
  • be already registered/admitted to a Ph.D. degree at a recognised university/institution in India
  • hold a first-class postgraduate degree with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate at both graduate and postgraduate level

 

*Note:- 

  • Age relaxation of up to 5 years will be granted to OBC-NCL/ST/SC/PwD/women/third-gender candidates.
  • Age relaxation of up to 5 years will be granted to candidates who have served in the armed forces subject to the length of service in the armed forces up to 1st October of the year of selection.
  • Under no circumstances will an age relaxation of more than 5 years be allowed.
Benefits

The selected students will receive a maintenance allowance including a tuition fee of ₹18,000 per month and an annual contingent expense for study tours within India, purchase of books, stationery, etc. of ₹15,000.

Documents
  • A passport-size photograph of the applicant
  • A synopsis of the proposed project as per the attached format
  • Doctoral Monitoring Committee’s report or Supervisor’s report/recommendations
  • Postal order/demand draft of ₹100
  • Ph.D. registration certificate
  • Caste/special category certificate issued by a competent authority (if applicable)
  • Self-attested photocopies of certificates and marksheets as proof of age and educational qualifications

Step 3: Download the application form.
Step 4: Fill in the required details and enclose all the necessary documents.
Step 5: Send the completed application form and documents with a postal order/demand draft of ₹100 drawn in favour of  ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund’ before 31st August 2025 to the following address:

Note:- Candidates belonging to the SC/ST categories are exempt from the ₹100 application fee.

Reservation:The scholarship reservation is as follows:

General Economically Weaker Sections (General-EWS) 10%

General Terms & Conditions:

  • Applicants currently receiving scholarships or funding from other sources are not eligible for this scholarship.
  • Candidates who have applied for Ph.D. registration but haven’t been registered yet at the time of application submission are not eligible.
  • Only complete applications with all required documents and signatures will be accepted.
  • The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund’s decision regarding interview calls and scholarship selections is final. No appeals will be considered.
  • The fund is not responsible for postal delays that cause applications to arrive past the deadline.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews sometime in January or February.
  • The scholarship typically commences on April 1st of each year.
  • Awardees must sign an undertaking agreeing to abide by the scholarship’s terms and conditions.
  • In case the scholarship board determines a breach of these terms, the awardee may be required to refund the scholarship amount already received.
  • Selected candidates will be required to submit an undertaking before receiving the Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarship. This undertaking confirms they are not receiving any other scholarships or funding.
  • Additionally, the institution where the candidate is pursuing their Ph.D. will need to provide a similar undertaking.
